About the event

Join us at our new Preloved Studio for a free community workshop in our latest instalment of Project Preloved.

In this workshop, you will learn how to create your own Pin Cushion, or Victorian Sewing Kit. Sometimes called a 'Housewife' or 'Hussif', this Victorian-style travel sewing kit has space to hold all your sewing tools for when you're on the go. The Pin Cushion needs no introduction, as one of the most useful and iconic items in anyone's sewing kit! The project reduces textiles waste by using donated preloved fabrics, such as bed linens, that are often not accepted by charity shops. Not only that, but you'll make some new sewing friends along the way!

If choosing to make a beautiful Pin Cushion, you will be shown how using hand sewing techniques.  For more confident hand sewers, you could choose to make the Victorian Sewing Kit by hand, or if you are familiar with using a sewing machine you are very welcome to use this method.

And of course, you can take your finished item away with you to show off to your friends and family!

Meet your workshop facilitator: Fiona Graham

Fiona has many year’s experience in the clothing and home textiles industry and has a lifelong love of sewing and making things. She worked in manufacturing, and in product development for major high street retailers .

She has a wide knowledge of all garment types and sewing techniques to share!

Important Information for Workshop Attendees:

This event is for adults only (18+). Sadly, we do not have the facilities to accommodate children during this workshop.

Please arrive at the Preloved Studio in Canons House 5 minutes before the start of the workshop.

No previous sewing experience is needed. If you are familiar with using sewing machines, you will be invited to create a Victorian Sewing Kit. Those with no sewing machine experience will be invited to hand sew a beautiful pin cushion.

Tools and equipment needed for the workshop are provided by the Preloved Studio.

Fabrics will be provided, but if you have any old fabrics or worn out bed sheets that you particularly love and want to use, feel free to bring them. Please clean and iron the fabrics before hand.

Thank you to The Little A.R.K for organisation this wonderful workshop.

Project Preloved workshops are made possible with the support of the Merton Giving Renewal Fund and The National Lottery.
